    Q&A with S&S

S&S: What’s your style of music? How do you describe it? That’s a good question.  I call my genre “Soul Folk”.  I write songs from the storyteller’s point of view and lace it with acoustic and R&B sounds.    I would describe it as easy listening.

S&S: Who or what was most instrumental to you when it came to music? My parents brought me up listening to good music.  My dad is a retired music teacher who became a principal and administrator.  He always had instruments in the house.  My mom would listen to Jackie Wilson, Smokey Robinson, and other soul and blues music.  Lastly, in grade school, I was in all school musicals.  All of this made me love music, diverse genres, and sounds.

S&S: What drives you creatively? My creativity is rooted in my faith and belief and love.  I also feel creative when I am by bodies of water and in nature.  There is nothing like sitting in a quiet space, in thought, to get my creative thoughts in gear.

S&S: How much does your audience influence you and your music selection? The audience that enjoys my music influences me by their pure support.  They don’t put expectations on me to be and create anything other than my true expression.  They allow me to create with the resources I have and from my soul.

S&S: What artists or genres do you listen to when you’re not working? I listen to almost everything.  I love listening to Spanish radio in Chicago. I also listen to music streaming stations that include Bill Withers, Michael Bublé, Stevie Wonder, Stokley, Eminem, Aretha Franklin, Adele, CeCe Winans, Amel Larrieux, Sade and many more.

S&S: Do you have any favorite memories of growing up with your family? My favorite memories include road trips in the back of my parents’ station wagon. We would go from Chicago to Mississippi and back… I remember the music playing from state to state.  Lots of country and Michael Jackson.

S&S: Is there anything you would like people to know about you? I am a songwriter who likes to sing.  I write what I call life songs.

S&S: Are there any charities you are working with or excited to tell us about? I support the work of the Salvation Army.  On a local level, I support the Englewood Veterans Garden who work tirelessly to help sow seeds of peace in one of Chicago’s toughest neighborhoods.  Even during the pandemic, these organizations are giving outstanding services.

S&S: Are there any questions that you wish people would ask you? Not really.

S&S: And on the flip side of that, are there any questions or references you wish people would stop asking or using? Why are you single?

S&S: What artist(s) have you been the most excited to work with? Working with DJ Skip & Zonum was fun.  Greg McGuirk produced the original “Morning Dew” and a host of other songs for me. he was great to work with.  I am also always excited to work with artist/producer T. L. Williams.

S&S: Are there any artists that you dream of working with on a collaboration? Such a hard question!  I would have to say Passenger, Ed Sheeran, Usher, and Michael Bublé come to mind first.  I am a huge Michael Bublé fan. I would love to work with him.  Also, it would be cool to sing a hook for Chicago’s own Common or Chance the Rapper.

S&S: What can we look forward to next from you? I have been working on songs for a new album but before that, I plan to put out a few singles.  Right now, the world is hurting and I look forward to releasing whatever positive messages I can.
