Deejay Threejay – “I Still Love The Underground”

S&S: What’s your style of music? How do you describe it?
Deejay Threejay: House music… Feel good music, Jack your body music I also like to beat some techno.

S&S: Who or what was most instrumental to you when it came to music?
Deejay Threejay: This is a big question given I grew up to the sound of House music in Chicago… Julian Jumpin Perez – “give em some of that deep house”, Steve Silk Hurley, Pierre, Ralphi Razz Rosario, Bad Boy Bill, Gino Rockin Romo, Kenny Jammin Jason, Spanky of Phuture 303, just to name a few.

    S&S: What drives you creatively?
Deejay Threejay: Playing dope underground gigs… I still love the underground! My creativity mainly gets fueled by listening to other people production or mix sets… then spinning off on my own direction.

S&S: How much does your audience influence you and your music selection?
Deejay Threejay: I play what I like… What I can feel… What I want the people to feel… Music that feels good! So in other words I play what I want from what I brought… I might just cherry pick a little more.

S&S: What artists or genres do you listen to when you’re not working?
Deejay Threejay: Tough one… I grew up in an era of music that was dope all around so I go across the board and jump genres… Red Hot Chili Peppers, Sublime, Guns N Roses, Eagles, AC DC, Dr. Dre, Eazy-E, Biggie, Sade, Common, Donna Summer… then there are the classic House and Italo disco and old warehouse tracks!

S&S: Do you have any favorite memories of growing up with your family?
Deejay Threejay: My best memory growing up with my family is with my Dad… He was a DJ and taught me how to use the decks, He supported me when I started traveling to play gigs and catch flights when I was still in high school. The biggest of all… HE HELPED ME PULL OFF SOME OF THE BIGGEST AND MOST MEMORABLE UNDERGROUND PARTIES IN THE MIDWEST “back in the day”.

S&S: Is there anything you would like people to know about you?
Deejay Threejay: Yes… I love to BBQ!

S&S: Are there any charities you are working with or excited to tell us about?
Deejay Threejay: Well… I work with my old church parish. We have done some house music events where the profits go to the school and church. I plan on doing an event soon strictly for a charity or a cause… Like Diabetes awareness, I have a lot of family and friends who battle with this.

S&S: Are there any questions that you wish people would ask you?
Deejay Threejay: Yup… I wish people would ask me about me and what I am doing today, what I am working on with music. I am trying to focus with music over events.

S&S: And on the flip side of that, are there any questions or references you wish people would stop asking or using?
Deejay Threejay: Not really… I have a wide stream of friends from different era’s and scene’s and everyone has their memory with me or from me.

S&S: What artist(s) have you been the most excited to work with?
Deejay Threejay: Too many… All have been great. From booking artists, to playing with artists and now working with some on music releases. My Chicago Fam… Home is where the heart is!

S&S: Are there any artists that you dream of working with on a collaboration?
Deejay Threejay: Yes… People who I grew up listening to like Pierre & Spanky of Phuture 303. Then my hometown homies like… Submerge, Paul Anthony, DJ Skip, Josh Mosely, Paul Johnson & Robert Armani

S&S: What can we look forward to next from you?
Deejay Threejay: 2 things… My music label coming this fall called 312 JACKS – House music focused on the Chicago sound of Jackin, Disco, Tracky, Warehouse music. My new mix series I started called HUSTLE 4 HOUSE… I got a lot of love from people on this first one, made from the sound I love the most.

S&S: What legacy would you like to leave?
Deejay Threejay: Staying true to the underground! House music in my heart… Techno in the blood!
