Steve Amoroso – “It All Comes Together Once I Get Behind The Decks”
Steve Amoroso is a New York City based DJ / Producer. He is Regarded as one of the hardest working DJ’s in the industry. His work ethic and passion for house music has brought industry-wide recognition. Amoroso first fell in love with house music when he was still in high school . He embarked on a path toward the vibrant club scene & rave culture of NYC, getting his dancing feet wet at popular clubs such as Exit, Sound Factory, Tunnel, Lime Light, Centro Fly, World, Roxy, etc.
It was stepping into Danny Tenaglia’s Vinyl for the first time where he had the most influential & life changing experience. Q&A by S&S
S&S: What’s your style of music? How do you describe it?
Steve Amoroso: Straight up house, with a dash of techno.S&S: Who or what was most instrumental to you when it came to music?
Steve Amoroso: Hearing Danny Tenaglia at Vinyl for the first time absolutely changed my life. People say that statement all the time but I don’t use it lightly. I never in my life heard and felt music that way. Everyone was having the time of there lives, especially Danny. I said to myself if he can make everyone feel this way imagine how that makes him feel inside. Been chasing that dragon ever since, when you hit it, it is euphoric in was you can’t even describe in words, its sense of unity between dj & people on the dance floor you can only understand if you where there.S&S: What drives you creatively?
Steve Amoroso: My love for the music is just pure, its that alone that drives me.S&S: How much does your audience influence you and your music selection?
Steve Amoroso: 100%. Every record, every choice I make is based on the reaction of the people in front of me. Sure I have my selections but I come to every gig with a wide verity of music that I don’t even know what I’m going to play most the time. It all comes together once I get behind the decks and see the way the people react. Its very natural & instinctual I feel.S&S: What artists or genres do you listen to when you’re not working?
Steve Amoroso: 90’s hip hop / R&B, that shit gets me going! Anything from Biggie to Mary J, from Tribe Called Quest to Blackstreet.S&S: Do you have any favorite memories of growing up with your family?
Steve Amoroso: Dancing around the kitchen to Doo woop & listening to Paul Simon on family vacations. Anytime I here a song from my child hood it takes me back like I’m physically there.S&S: Is there anything you would like people to know about you?
Steve Amoroso: I’m pretty much an open book, so most people who know me already know what I’m about. For those who don’t let me tell you, my love for music drives me to do this. Its like everytime I hear a new record I love it makes me into a little kid again jumping for joy with the biggest grin on my face.S&S: Are there any charities you are working with or excited to tell us about?
Steve Amoroso: I wish I could say there’s a lot but living in New York & raising a 2 year old aint cheap. I have how ever done events for AIDS, Cancer, and Alzheimer’s research. I would love to do more to help, especially with these issues because it hits close to home.S&S: Are there any questions that you wish people would ask you?
Steve Amoroso: “Are you hungry?” I’m always hungry and these nightclubs don’t serve food lol.S&S: And on the flip side of that, are there any questions or references you wish people would stop asking or using?
Steve Amoroso: None that I can think of.S&S: What artist(s) have you been the most excited to work with?
Steve Amoroso: DJ Pierre, the godfather of acid house. I’m working with his label Afro Acid as a producer / remixer / artist.
Also just recently, Juan Atkins. I’ve started my own party in Brooklyn with legendary rave/club promoter Tom Mello called “DOWN.” and we booked him to play our grand opening. Sharing the decks with the godfather of techno was surreal.S&S: Are there any artists that you dream of working with on a collaboration?
Steve Amoroso: To many to name, but most recently I would love to work with Catz ‘n Dogz. I’ve loved their music for a while, but I just recently saw them play in Ibiza and they blew my mind! Best set I’ve heard all year no doubt about it. Absolutely amazing DJ’s and producers.S&S: What can we look forward to next from you?
Steve Amoroso: Lots of tracks coming out in 2016, and a lot more traveling from me.S&S: What legacy would you like to leave?
Steve Amoroso: I’d like to be remembered for my love for the music, the scene and everything in between. Most importantly the love I have for everyone I play for. It’s the people moving & grooving that keeps me going.Q&A By: Shannon “Skip” Syas – S&S Chicago
